Ukraine
Russia has ramped up attacks in Donbas. Zelensky describes the situation there as ‘hell.’
The Americas
General Mark Milley spoke with Russian Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov for the first time since the invasion. The readout from the Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesperson said the two discussed security-related matters and agreed to keep the lines of communication open. No further details were provided.
Major asset managers assure Texas that they won’t divest from energy any time soon. Boycotting fossil fuels is now prohibited under a new Texas law.
Europe and Central Asia
The shunned ex-Chancellor of Germany finally resigned from Rosneft’s board of directors on Friday. He has largely ignored pressure to dissociate from Putin and Russian state-owned companies until now. Meanwhile, Russia has officially cut off gas to Finland in a widely anticipated retaliatory move.
At a G7 summit in Bonn, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner announced a EUR 1 billion contribution for Ukraine. His stated goal is to ‘secure the liquidity of the Ukrainian state.’
Poland is reportedly sending 25,000 tons of gasoline to Ukraine.
The Indo-Pacific
Volkswagen AG is ‘exploring a partnership’ with Indian auto manufacturer Mahindra. The deal would be for electric vehicle (EV) components.
Honda is also upping its EV game with the Prologue electric SUV, aiming for a small piece of the Tesla-led market in the US.
The Middle East and Africa
Lucid Group Inc. is set to receive $3.4 billion in incentives for setting up an EV factory in Saudi Arabia.
Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani just sealed a deal with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to start supplying liquid natural gas (LNG) by 2024.
