The War

Attacks continued in the capital, Kyiv, with no major breakthroughs resulting from the fourth round of peace talks. Leaders of Poland, Slovenia and the Czech Republic traveled there, despite bombardment. Meanwhile, looting by Russian troops is reported and the fate of Melitopol mayor Ivan Fedorov looks grim as he is transported by to Luhansk on terrorism charges. 

Economics

German conglomerate Bayer will provide ‘essential services’ to Russia for now, but does not guarantee next year. Oil prices dipped below $100 per barrel, although this is partially attributed to a new COVID surge in China. 

Technology

DuckDuckGo takes a stand on Russian propaganda. Nickel and neon costs are spiking due to the conflict, affecting semiconductor supply chains.

Europe

Ukraine demands the expulsion of Russia from the Council of Europe. The Arctic Council’s Cold Response 2022 is taking place in Norway, a few hundred kilometers from the Russian border. Ex-chancellor Schröder met with Putin in no official capacity. A Russian Channel One employee staged an ‘extraordinary act of dissent,’ prompting her arrest. Russian Orthodox clergy are breaking with Patriarch Kirill by condemning the war.

U.S. and the World

India is considering a bargain buy of Russian oil, complementing its long-standing arms relationship. The US warns China against assistance to Russia. Hong Kong-listed Chinese tech stocks plummet in ‘panic selling.’ Haaretz reports that Israeli law cannot require private companies to comply with any sanctions, but officials will start tracking private yachts and jets.
