The Unhinged Dissent of the American GOP is Still Better than No Dissent at All

The contrast between the vibrant exchange Joe Biden had with the U.S. Congress during the State of the Union address and the spectacle of the zombie audience that endured Vladimir Putin’s hour and 45-minute-long torrent of lies in his own address to his people this week was striking.

The fact is that the behavior around leaders in authoritarian states very often resembles the extremes depicted in literature or films. That is perhaps why a top selling book in Russia now is George Orwell’s “1984.” Because it feels so familiar to readers in that country
