A Nothingburger with a Hint of Salsa and a Drizzle of Maple Syrup
The New NAFTA looks a lot like the old NAFTA with a few bits of TPP cut and pasted into it and a couple of modest concessions from our neighbors to the north and the south. Still that didn\’t stop Trump from declaring it was the greatest deal in the history of trade (it was already the largest), that it would fix our big deficits with our neighbors (we already have a surplus with China), that it would create lots of jobs (nope) and that its new, unpronounceable name, USMCA, was an improvement over NAFTA. He also through a party for it and declared victory even though the crisis he had averted was entirely of his own creation. Still, Canada and Mexico probably didn\’t mind. At least the U.S. president had not blown up the deal or tried to make them pay for his ridiculous wall.
In the following column for The Daily Beast, Deep State Radio host David Rothkopf, shares his views on what\’s new about the new deal, what\’s not, and why it might actually be a harbinger for better things to come with some of Trump\’s other looming trade conflicts.
